Catalunya Costa Brava PWA Slalom World Cup 2008
Antoine Albeau and Karin Jaggi win and get ahead in the classification of Slalom World Tour.
The Bay of Roses has been the scene of the second round of Slalom PWA calendar, from 10 to 15 June. The test was played in Sant Pere Pescador, with the La Ballena Alegre 2 campsite where the fleet has stayed the PWA.
Participation in this event was high, with a total of 66 men and 21 women enrolled, making it one of the biggest slalom fleets to compete in a test of the PWA for the past 8 years.
The first two days of competition the wind was too lazy to make sleeves, and most competitors used the time to prepare and adjust their material for the third day where the wind forecast was good. The forecast did not fail and the third day offered perfect conditions for slalom.
Race 1 -
In the early races, with gusts in excess of 30 knots, was a great duel between the experience of Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North Sails) with youth and claw Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde), with the victory in this case for the young Brit.
Where competing Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde), crushed without mercy all winning each and every one of the sleeves and secured passage to the final and secured the victory in the first round.
Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra) dominated their sleeves with great consistency, winning the second place, and Finian Maynard (NeilPryde) in third.
In women's competition, the first surprise of the day was with Iballa Moreno (North Sails) in which he had high hopes, being eliminated prematurely.
Valarie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) hit the gas and took the win, followed by Karin Jaggi (F2, North Sails) and Ayako Suzuki (Starboard, Gaastra) in third.
Race 2 -
The other heavyweights began to be comfortable slalom and pressured the incombustible Albeau, who looked unstoppable. Leading the charge against Albeau was Micah Buzianis (JP, NeilPryde, MFC), who won ahead of Albeau and Sylvain Moussilmani (F2, Simmer Sails) in third.
In the second heat of the women dominated Jaggi safely, ensuring the first place. Iballa Moreno recovered from the failure in the first round and took second place and former sailor Lee Korzitz RS-X was third.
Race 3 -
The third heat was the sailors to the limit. The Argentinean Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (F2, NeilPryde, MFC) made good using their sleeves regatta to clinch a place in the final. Finian Maynard finished third, but the absolute victory of the day was as Albeau not stop, with the second win of the day and secured the top spot on the podium.
The day ended with the third qualifying Jaggi and Ghibaudo women where they left prematurely opening the door to Iballa Moreno to claim the first victory, with Lee Korzitz in second and France third Arutkin Alice.
The fourth day started well with some tops, but decided to close the competition at the onset of rain, thunder and some lightning.
There were two days of competition, but the wind did not make an appearance, giving so terminate the event.
