Interview with Sergio Alonso, shaper of Sailboards Tarifa
When you interview a shaper always appears the dichotomy vs custom. series.
It is inevitable ... the shaper, even made the table with his hands and over about ten days only will be watching "your" table out perfect to give you the best windsurfing for a long time.
Here we reproduce an interview CatalunyaWindsurf.com Sergio de Sailboards Tarifa.
We agreed to interview one of the biggest names in windsurfing in Spain and Europe: Sergio Alonso Minuth, shaper and manager Sailboards Tarifa, the factory custom that dares to compete with the titans of production.
Sailboards RATE, THE VIRTUE OF SIMPLICITY
CW - When and why would you recommend a custom table?
ST - We know how people look. Besides being able to customize the table. We walk with nonsense having ten different models of tables. We have the necessary model and, within these models, we can always change the volume and other measures, songs, always attentive to customer demands. We offer an unbeatable price tables and much tougher and stronger than standard tables. Add to this that the benefits are much greater. Are tables that help you progress and they can get much performance ... Nothing comparable to the standard tables!
CW - What is your opinion on standard tables?
ST - There are very good boards on the market. The big problem is the fragility and the wide range they offer. It would be better to rethink the models, which will refine more with fewer models. Virtue is in the simplicity and effectiveness of the tables, not the graphics or the stories they tell us they do or not do tables.
120 to 140 units per year
CW - At what times you work more?
ST - Working less in January and July to August. The rest of the year we will go.
CW - How many tables do you get per year?
ST - Between 120 and 140 units.
CW - Exportáis?
ST - France, Germany, Belgium, UK.
CW - Do you have a customer profile?
ST - We buy all kinds of people, from the radical intermediates.
CW - How long does it take to build a table?
ST - From the client's requests until it is yours, it takes more than a month. In days is difficult to quantify, depends on the ambient temperature Wink 9 days or so.
"DO NOT FOLLOW FASHION, we are guided by Instinct"
CW - How do you remain current on trends and customer needs?
ST - Our models are constantly evolving. How? Simple: normally sail every week and we are able to test the models and change the parameters that we deem appropriate. We do not follow trends, we followed our instinct. We are guided by the factor function. For marketing, fashion, etc.., Are brands and series. We must be practical. Note that people usually have little time to surf and what counts is to enjoy to the fullest.
"SAIL WITH THE PEOPLE"
CW - Does the customer what they want exactly?
ST - Generally, the client knows what he wants, but we always have the last word. One thing is what one you can pass through the head and another what works. We usually recommend, advise and, if we can, always try to navigate with people or at least know where surfing spots, what type of candle used, its level, the tables had before ... what do you look in comparison with I had, what he did not like their previous material, etc. Knowing this, success is sure.
"TODAY IS GOING TO STOP WINDSURF"
CW - You see the windsurfing market today?
ST - Windsurfing going to stop, every day better. We noticed a recovery in the last two years very positive, and this not only happens here in Spain but also in France. It is a good sign. Furthermore, note that people seek the good product and looks very motivated. The only thing missing is that more quarry, which is very complicated.
