PWA Lanzarote Grand Slam 2005 - Day 5 - Start the Freestyle
Taty Frans wins first freestyle single elimination. In women, Daida Ruano Moreno Vistoria adds another to his long list.
After these days of competition SuperX, the PWA Lanzarote Costa Teguise Grand Slam 2005 continues freestyle qualifying. The trade winds blow canaries 15 to 25 knots out most competitors with 4.7m sails
There were several gaps in the last 16 male finalists. Victor Fernandez (E-42, Fanatic) was not in favor of Marcilio Browne (BRA-105, Naish / Naish). Matteo Guazzoni (I-711) left out Diony Guadagnino (V-69, Neil Pryde) and Andre Paskowski (G-2, F2/North) defeated Kauli Seadi (BRA-253, Quatro / Naish). The Dutch expert Remko de Weerd freestyle (H-23, Fanatic / Gaastra) had to watch as the young talent Kiri Thode (NB-61, Starboard / Gaastra) left him in the gutter.
The following 4 sleeves, the 16 finalists battled for a spot in the quarterfinals. Competed Marcilio Browne (BRA-105, Naish / Naish), Douglas Diaz (V-34, Fanatic / North), Kevin Mevissen (H-79, JP / Neil Pryde) and Andre Paskowski (G-2, F2/North). In the second quarter-final, Jose Estredo (V-1, Fanatic / North) against Taty Frans (NB-9, Starboard / MauiSails) and Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou / Gaastra) against Ricardo Campello (V-111, JP / Neil Pryde).
Douglas Diaz (V-34, Fanatic / North) was sailing very well and eliminated Marcilio Browne (BRA-105, Naish / Naish) with a repertoire of tricks apmplio. Andre Paskowski (G-2, F2/North) defeated Kevin Mevissen (H-79, JP / Neil Pryde) and went to the semifinals. Taty Frans (NB-9, Starboard / MauiSails) also spent defeating Jose Estredo (V-1, Fanatic / North) and the last to move on to semis was Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou / Gaastra), who defeated Richard Campello (V-111, JP / Neil Pryde).
In the semifinal, Douglas Diaz faced Andre Paskowski. Both were known to perfection and who train in the same place, El Yaque, Isla Margarita. The Venezuelan seemed invincible but the German was giving it all, but was unable to Cheo Diaz. In the other sleeve, Taty Frans (NB-9, Starboard / MauiSails) it was very difficult against Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou / Gaastra), but eventually managed to defeat the French. Cheo Diaz was waiting at the end of this first round.
Diaz and Frans started the final with high wind gusts, with a spock coming to the beach. Diaz made a grubby puñeta followed by 540 in the turn. Frans took a clewfirst spock 540 followed by a perfect flaka. Diaz continued to show their full repertoire of flakas, funnels and grubbies. Frans made an impressive 540 and their operation eslider house brand, a chacho switchstance 540. Diaz added a semi voquech to your list, and Frans a full voquech followed by a stylized switchstance flaka. Diaz was a shaka and then shot a ponch, but it landed planning. At the sound of the trumpet, Taty Frans (NB-9, Starboard / MauiSails) earned the victory of the first freestyle single elimination here in Lanzarote. In the losers final, Andre Paskowski (G-2, F2/North) was third ahead of Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou / Gaastra).
Now it was to the women: The first quarter-final, Iballa Moreno (E-63, Mistral / North) beat Femke van der Valk (NB-05, F2) and Karin Jaggi (Z-14, F2) increased beating Junko Nagoshi (J-11) who was unlucky to break the mast track during the race. In the second quarterfinal, Silvia Alba (E-67, Tabou / Gaastra) beat Nayra Alonso (E-4, Fanatic / Severne) and Daida Moreno (E-64, Mistral / North) defeated Yolanda Freites of Brendt ( V-26, Fanatic / North) securing a place in the next round.
In the semifinals faced Iballa Moreno against Karin Jaggi and Daida Moreno against Silvia Alba. Jaggi was sailing better than Iballa, who was resisting, but failed in some maneuvers. So was the Swiss who spent the final. On the other hand, Daida was sailing very well. Silvia Alba did a spock 540 but Daida Moreno took the victory with a one-handed spock to make things clear.
Karin Jaggi opened the final with a bodydrag reaching the shore as Daida Moreno tried a spock but fell. Jaggi was shot a grubby but could not nail it. Daida made a perfect spock out, and a forward Jaggi. Daida also made a forward then adding a body drag and a body-sail 360 to his credit. Jaggi went for her flaka, which normally does not fail, but this time fell. Meanwhile, Daida made a perfect grubby and finished his performance with a spock reaching the shore. Jaggi had to watch as Daida Moreno was done with the victory. In the losers final, Iballa Moreno took third place ahead of Silvia Alba who was fourth.
The competition freestyle competition continues ... we still have much to see!
