Hola David
This "Peeltex" layer leaves a rough aspect after have been teared off. It is better for following layers or sandwich sticking, whitout having to "attack" the under glass layers. It allows also to "rubb" a little the difference of thickness, because of some local multi-layers....
AND....it absorb some resin too......
Quite hard to try to explain technical features in a stranger language !!!!!
As for what I think I have understood of some questions on the topic:
The use of glass fiber instead of carbon or kevlar not allows to obtain the same weights, BUT with a double sandwich, I reach under 7 kg (without straps and fin, for a 75 liters heavy duty wave board), what I think quite honnest.......The board of the video is now 6.6 kg after paint (It will reach around 7 kg), and the one the 2007's vidéo 7.2 kg.....
BUT the glass fiber is a very good material, not too expensive and not too difficult to deal with in the process.
BUT anyone is free to by a 5 kg Fanatic Board at......almost 2000 euros a think.......I could too, these are with no doubt better shapes than mines, but I love Shaping !!!
Thank you too for remembering me I made my first board 26 years ago

(I was 15) !!!! But I still consider myself as a learner, in shaping and wavesailing.
Hast luego
